President’s Report

Spring is here and the days are getting palpably longer and warmer! The Kings Park Festival is also underway!

On Thursday September 3, Dr Josh Byrne delivered the 2020 Festival Address on “Greening Cities in a Changing World – the role of gardens, parks and unconventional spaces”. The event was fully booked and Josh gave a wonderful talk – entertaining, informative and lavishly illustrated with photographs. We are looking forward to further talks and events planned for the reminder of the year by the Communications sub-committee of the Management Committee.

The Growing Friends have been busy in the nursery. Everything is on track for our native plant sale on the morning of Sunday September 20. This will be our first on-site/person-to-person plant sale since March – yet another step in the return to normal activities for the Friends.

As mentioned in previous newsletters, we have been very fortunate and grateful that membership numbers have held up well throughout the coronavirus crisis. Thank you to all our members for your support throughout a very difficult time for the Friends! We have also been fortunate that assistance from State and Federal governments has kept us in a sound financial position.

A reminder that our AGM is coming up on October 15 and we’ll be calling for a new committee to serve from October 2020 to October 2022. Next week we’ll be sending out invitations to the AGM, as well as a link for nominating for membership of the Management Committee.

I intend to re-nominate for the committee; however, reluctantly I’ll be stepping down from the position of President. I encourage any of you with leadership aspirations (and, hopefully, some relevant experience) to nominate for the position.

Ros Hew (front centre) at the 2018 Volunteer’s Christmas Party with Ruth Robertson, Liz Millward, Julia Stevenson, Larr Rose, Susan Dolgoy and Father Christmas!

Vale Ros Hew

The Friends of Kings Park is saddened to share the news of the loss of one of our beloved members, Ros Hew. Along with her husband Alex, Ros was a member of the Friends since 2004, and was continuously involved in volunteer activities in that time. Ros was a dedicated plant sale volunteer and was also a vital member of the office team, assisting with the mail out of the quarterly magazine for many years.

She passed away peacefully, after a lengthy illness. We offer our sincere condolences to Alex and the extended Hew family.

September Native Plant Sale

Our September Native Plant Sale is just weeks away! The sale will take place on

Sunday 20th September, 9am – 12:30pm

Please note this is a new date from the previously advertised date,
due to delays in preparation as a result of COVID.

While not as big as our usual September sale, we will have lots of beautiful native plants for a one-day sale at the Exhibition Grounds in Kings Park. All applicable COVID restrictions will be observed to ensure the safety of our customers and volunteers.

We look forward to seeing you there!

For the first time, our exclusive Orchids and Grevilleas will be available to members online only! These plants will not be available for sale at the Plant Sale, and will be sold through our website in the lead up to the Plant Sale.

The online sale will take place from 11 Sept – 15 Sep, with collection on Plant Sale day (20 Sept).

Stay tuned to the newsletter for details of how to access the sale.

Plant Sale Volunteers

We need you!

As the Plant Sale fast approaches, we need your help to ensure a successful event! The Plant Sale will run as normal, with some extra precautions in place to ensure we comply with COVID-Safe requirements and protect the health of our volunteers and customers. This will include limits on customers in the Plant Sale area, social distancing for queues and sales desks, gloves, hand sanitisers and masks available and a few extra volunteer roles to ensure everything runs smoothly.

Since we also have an online Orchid and Grevillea sale this time, we have added a new role to manage the collection point of these online orders.

Please use the form below to sign up to volunteer if you can help. As always, please don’t feel obliged to volunteer if you are not comfortable attending such events at this time, and please do not attend on the day if you are unwell.

Please email Alex on [email protected] if you have any questions or concerns about volunteering at the Plant Sale.

2020 AGM

The 2020 Annual General Meeting of the Friends of Kings Park will be held on:

Thursday 15 October 2020
5:30pm, for a 6pm start
We will be meeting in a new venue this year to accommodate social distancing:
NextGen Pavilion, Kings Park
This beautiful heritage venue has been kindly offered to us by Next Gen Health & Lifestyle Club and we look forward to forging a new partnership with our neighbour. Free parking is available with easy access to the location – see this map for directions.

We also look forward to hearing from our guest speaker, Belinda Davies, who will give a presentation on her work with orchids in the park.

More information will follow next week with details of the Management Committee elections and how to nominate for a position.

2020 Festival Address

It was wonderful to see so many of our members and supporters last night as we re-launched our events schedule post-COVID with a fantastic presentation by Dr Josh Byrne for the 2020 Festival Address!

Josh engaged the audience with his talk on “Greening Cities in a Changing World – the Role of Gardens, Parks & Unconventional Spaces”, generously answering questions and signing copies of his new book, The Sustainable House Handbook, available for sale now at Aspects!

2021 Calendar

Our very popular Wildflower Calendar is now available, featuring a beautiful selection of native flowers and plants. It makes the perfect gift for locals and visitors alike.

The calendar can now be purchased on our website and will soon be available in Aspects. Friends members enter the discount coupon that was emailed to you to receive a 15% discount off the retail price.

Don’t forget, proceeds from the sale of the calendar go straight to the Friends, to support important projects within Kings Park.

Make sure you don’t miss out! Last year’s calendar sold faster than we anticipated and a few folks were left disappointed. Support the Friends of Kings Park by purchasing your calendar now!

Recently, the Friends supported a local student with a donation of Geraldton Wax for his school project. Judd from John Forrest Secondary College put on a stall called “Plant-ation”, supporting the Friends, Environment House and City of Bayswater. Judd made a poster that included promoting Friends of Kings Park and a QRCode that takes you straight to a booklet from City of Bayswater showing which native plants to put in your local garden. Judd’s stall was a great success and he has generously donated $200 from the proceeds to the Friends of Kings Park. Well done Judd!

WWF Quenda Survey

Between 2012-2018 the Spring Quenda Count had a great turn out of dedicated citizen scientists wanting to do their bit to help WWF-Australia and the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) better understand our urban quendas in the face of urban sprawl and loss of natural habitat. After an absence in 2019, WWF Australia are calling on the community to join them in 2020 for another fabulous Spring Quenda Count!
