Volunteering

Volunteering is a great way to meet people, learn new skills and contribute to the conservation of the natural environment. Friends of Kings Park volunteers contribute a lot of of time and skills to assist in the maintenance of the Park, through the groups listed below.

How to Get Involved

  1. Become a Friends of Kings Park member. You must be a member and over 18 to volunteer with us.
  2. Find the latest volunteering opportunities in our monthly e-newsletter, including details of the position and how to apply.
  3. Follow the instructions in the newsletter to apply and our team will be in touch.
  4. New volunteers are required to have a health & safety induction and training before joining a group.

Please do not show up to volunteer without applying to join a group first.

We regularly recruit for the various Bushland Carers and Garden Carers groups and have volunteering opportunities on both weekdays and weekends. Please note that spaces in some other groups, such as Growing Friends and Fixing Friends, is more limited.

We encourage applications from all backgrounds, communities, and life stages, and are committed to having a team that is made up of diverse skills, experiences and abilities. We are happy to discuss how volunteering could work for you. Please email admin@friendsofkingspark.com.au if you have any questions.

About our volunteer groups

Bushland Carers

Our Bushland Carers work to maintain and regenerate the areas of native bushland in Kings Park. They work with BGPA staff and learn about the fascinating world of Australian bush restoration and conservation. New volunteers: please wait for spaces to be advertised in the monthly newsletter as there is induction/training before joining the group.

Bushland Restoration Group

Our Bushland Restoration Group helps protect some of the most important bushland in the metropolitan area. Volunteers learn about the diversity of the Swan Coastal Plain along with techniques to manage and monitor it, including planting and weed control, undertaking seed collection and e-monitoring. New volunteers: please wait for spaces to be advertised in the monthly newsletter as there is induction/training before joining the group.

Garden Carers

Garden Carers work in the Botanic Garden section of Kings Park, assisting horticulturalists to maintain the diverse range of native plants from around Western Australia. Volunteers are involved in weeding, pruning, garden maintenance, mulching and planting in the botanic garden. New volunteers: please wait for spaces to be advertised in the monthly newsletter as there is induction/training before joining the group.

Growing Friends

The Growing Friends work in the nursery, and are responsible for propagating and growing thousands of Western Australian native plants for the Friends quarterly plant sales. New members are taken approximately once a year and intensive training is provided over several weeks. Regular attendance is required to maintain plant production levels.

Transition Bed Carers

Transition Bed Carers is a group set up in March 2026 to help develop and maintain garden beds along the Mount Eliza Escarpment, ranging in styles from cultivated garden to bushland beds. Volunteers help horticulture staff with weeding, pruning, garden maintenance, mulching and planting.

Resilient Landscape Carers

Resilient Landscape Carers assist horticultural staff with restoring and strengthening bushland areas of Rio Tinto Naturescape Kings Park. The group was set up in March 2026 and volunteers undertake weeding, pruning, garden maintenance, mulching, planting and monitoring natural systems including flora and water quality.

Plant Sale Volunteers

Plant sale volunteers are a vital part of each sale, keeping the benches tidy, tallying purchases, selling memberships, and managing the queues. No plant knowledge or previous experience is required. The call out for volunteers will be in the member newsletter before each sale. Plant sale volunteering is a fun way to spend a morning raising money for the Friends, and a great way to meet some of our regular volunteers.

Horticultural Advice and Support

The Horticultural Advice and Support team provide free native gardening advice via email and telephone, and at our quarterly native plant sales. The HAS team also undertake duties to assist BGPA Horticulture and Bushland staff, and care for a xeriscape bush garden within Kings Park. The garden was designed with a focus on water conservation, using local native plants sourced from Kings Park.

Climate Watch

Climate Watch is a national citizen science initiative. Help track the behaviour of specific species and their response to climate change at your own pace, while enjoying the beautiful surrounds of the park. Access maps, sign in sheets or find out more about the Friends of Kings Park Climate Watch Program here.

This specialised group assists Kings Park horticultural staff in the conservation of Western Australian terrestrial orchids, and the maintenance of the Botanical Gardens and Parks Authority living ex situ orchid collection. The Group works hard to ensure a steady supply and exciting variety of orchids are made available to the Friends plant sales each Spring.

Fixing Friends

Fixing Friends provide support for the Grounds & Infrastructure team in general maintenance and repair works to ensure that buildings and other park assets are appropriately maintained. Fixing Friends volunteers must be fit and healthy, enjoy working outdoors, have proven practical general maintenance skills and be experienced and competent in using small power tools and machinery.

Office Carers

The Office Carers are an essential part of the Friends team, offering support with tasks such as mail outs and data entry, and other activities to support members and volunteers. If you have a special skill that could be useful in the office, please let us know.

The Wanju Marr carers support the administrative and effective operations of the Volunteer Hub situated in Eucalyptus car park.

Events Volunteers

The Events Sub-committee together with events volunteers and the Events & Communications Coordinator plan exciting member events regularly throughout the year and ensure the smooth running of member events including set up, pack down, planning and evaluation. If you love attending Friends events and want to be more involved, contact events@friendsofkingspark.com.au to join and be amongst the first to hear about upcoming event volunteering opportunities.

Management Committee

Meetings are held in Kings Park every month, with occasional additional commitments. Previous experience is not required, but an interest in supporting volunteers, the not for profit sector, or conservation of WA’s unique flora would be advantageous. As with all volunteer positions, you will need to be a member of the Friends of Kings Park. Some information about our governance is here.
