Join us to find beautiful Western Australian native plants for your garden, lovingly grown by our Growing Friends volunteers, including species not often available at commercial nurseries. A comprehensive Plant Sale List will be available 2 weeks before the sale.

Getting to the plant sale: We encourage plant sale attendees to walk, cycle or catch public transport where possible. If driving, please note there is limited parking available at the Poolgarla Family Area carpark along Kulunga Grove. There is also parking available nearby along Jorang Grove (near Next Gen and the tennis courts) and Kings Park Rd. Visit the BGPA website to help plan your journey.

About our Native Plant Sales

Our Native Plant Sales are run by a team of volunteers, and our plants are lovingly grown by Growing Friends volunteers at the Kings Park Nursery.

Through rain, hail or sunshine, buyers from around Western Australia line up for the Friends of Kings Park native plant sales in March, May, September and November. We aim to provide opportunities for both beginner and experienced gardeners to find stunning Western Australian native plants (many that are not available at commercial nurseries) and to create stunning and biodiverse gardens.

The proceeds from sales go directly to the Friends of Kings Park. Friends of Kings Park actively supports Kings Park and Botanic Garden through volunteering, raising funds and being an advocate for the community. Our members, volunteers, donors and supporters help care for and maintain Kings Park and Botanic Garden and enable us to support important conservation and research projects.

Friends of Kings Park members receive a discount on plant sales (including new members joining at the plant sale). Join us to receive discounts at the Plant Sales and other great member benefits.

Growing Friends Nursery

Our plants are all grown by our Growing Friends volunteers in the Kings Park nursery, which is accredited under the Nursery Industry Accreditation Scheme Australia (NIASA).

Our plants are grown in small quantities and are only available at our plant sales or sometimes through special online sales. The plants are not for sale at other times during the year, and unfortunately, we are not able to ship them. Please have a look at our FAQs below for more information!

Frequently Asked Questions

The plant sale is held at Poolgarla Parkland, off Kings Park Road. Click here for a map to the location. Look for the flags on Kings Park Road on the day.

People have been known to queue several hours before the advertised opening time. If you have your heart set on something in particular your best chance is to get into the queue as early as possible. You can grab a coffee at the nearby Koorak Cafe and chat to other keen gardeners while you plan your purchases.

The sale usually ends at the advertised time, unless all the plants sell out in which case the sale may end sooner. The sale will continue if it rains, but very poor weather may close the sale earlier than expected.

There is free parking available near the Plant Sale at the Poolgarla Family Area carpark and along Kulunga Grove (enter off Kings Park Rd), as well as in the carpark nearby Next Gen and the tennis courts along Jorang Grove (enter off Kings Park Rd). There is also parking available on Kings Park Rd and nearby in West Perth.

We also encourage Plant Sale customers to consider alternative forms of transport, such as walking, cycling, or public transport. Please refer to BGPA’s Transport webpage for more information to plan your journey.

You can buy or renew your membership online or in person at the plant sale from our membership desk.

If you are unsure if your membership is up to date and want to check before the sale, please call the Friends office on 9480 3643. We will have a membership list at the cashier’s desk just in case you forget your card or are not sure if you are a current member.

Yes, there will be Horticultural Advice and Support volunteers at the plant sale to help with queries relating to the type of plant to purchase, planting and caring for your plants. Look for the volunteers with wearing floral aprons.

The plant sale list will be put on to the Friends of Kings Park website here about two weeks before the sale. It will list all the species for sale, their key characteristics and conservation status, and the number of plants available for each species.

The plants are organised by type e.g. climbers, shrubs, small shrubs, ground covers, small, trees etc. See the column called “plant type location” on the plant list. Each plant type will be indicated by a sign above the bench. Grafted plants will have their own bench.

The number of plants for sale is listed on the plant sale list. All plants are released at the opening time. For two day sales, about a third of the total plants are held back for the second day of the sale, however we cannot guarantee that every species on the plant list will be available on the second day.

Our plants are grown by a small group of volunteers, so sometimes the number of plants available is limited. If there is something you have your heart set on, we encourage you to get to the plant sale early so you don’t miss out.

Maybe! The Growing Friends are limited in the number of species they are able to grow, but they will consider expressions of interest in a particular species. This won’t guarantee the species will be grown, however. Please contact the office on 9480 3643 or email growers@friendsofkingspark.com.au with your request.

The price varies depending on pot size, and may be updated for each plant sale. Generally, smaller pots will cost between $5 and $9, and medium pots between $10 and $15. Rare plants may cost up to $30 or more. Updates are usually posted on our website here when the plant list goes live. Look for the signs on the day and the tags in the pots.

You can pay by cash or card. Please line up at a sales desk, and a volunteer will tally the amount of your purchase on a docket. You will then head to the cashier’s desk to make payment. Your docket will be stamped ‘paid’ and will need to be shown on exiting the sale.

Credit or debit card is the preferred method of payment.

We have hand-held baskets within the sale to help you gather your plants, however you cannot take these baskets out of the sale area. We do not provide trolleys, however you are welcome to bring your own small trolley/cart.

To take your plants home, we have eco-bags available for purchase or you can bring your own box or bags.

No, unfortunately, we cannot put plants aside or reserve them for people. In the interest of fairness, the only way plants can be sold is on a first come, first served basis. We are very sorry, but we cannot make exceptions, regardless of your circumstances.

Plants can only be purchased at our quarterly native plant sales. As a volunteer-led team, unfortunately we do not have the capacity to arrange purchase of plants before or after sales.

Plants can only be purchased at our quarterly plant sales, but you are welcome to purchase as many as you would like on the day.

Plants must be taken home on the day. As a volunteer-led team, unfortunately we do not have the capacity to store large numbers of plants to be collected at a later time.

No, plants can only be purchased at the plant sale. We have no facility to post or deliver plants.

You can take plants interstate, but you need to investigate the quarantine restrictions and receive a certificate to travel. The Friends is not able to organise quarantine arrangements for you. Please visit this website to find out more.

Make sure you do your quarantine research before you make a purchase, as the Friends is not able to give you a refund on your plants if you decide you are unable to take them back to your state.

No, only potted plants. A selection of seeds for native plants is available year round at Aspects of Kings Park Gallery and Shop.

Yes, dogs on leads are welcome at our Plant Sales. Please note that there are some areas of Kings Park where dogs are not permitted, refer to the BGPA website for more information.
